CMD Recertification Requirements Updates

The MDCB Board of Directors recently reviewed the recertification requirements for CMD certification. The board carefully considered each of the current continuing education (CE) requirements for recertification, as well as self-assessment procedures. After serious discussion, it was determined not to institute a self-assessment requirement. Only the following CE requirements were revised to support CMDs' demonstration of professional development and continuing competence and will be effective as of January 1, 2027:

• Certification Exam – category eliminated.
• Directed Journal Readings – a maximum of 40 CEUs will be allowed in any one recertification cycle. CMDs with recertification cycles that begin before 2027, that may have already completed 50 CEUs in their current cycle, will be exempt from the restriction. Any DJR credits earned after January 1, 2027, that exceed the 40 credit maximum will not count toward the 50 CEUs required for the five-year cycle.
• Journal Editing & Reviewing – a maximum of 40 CEUs will be allowed in any one recertification cycle. CMDs with recertification cycles that begin before 2027, that may have already completed 50 CEUs in their current cycle, will be exempt from the restriction. Any DJR credits earned after January 1, 2027, that exceed the 40-credit maximum will not count toward the 50 CEUs required for the five-year cycle.
• Plan Study – two (2) credits will be awarded for each plan study, with a maximum of ten (10) credits allowed in any one recertification cycle.
• Self-Study – category eliminated. CMDs with recertification cycles that begin before 2027, that may have already completed self-study CEUs in their current cycle, will be exempt from the restriction.

By maintaining the CMD credential, CMDs validate their skills and knowledge and provide assurance to the public and employers that they continue to meet the rigorous requirements of certification.
